  I moved to Columbia about three years ago and was looking for a new healthcare provider. During spring break (March 2016), I wasn't feeling well on and off and was feeling fatigued. My mother recommended this provider and had very high opinions of them. As I was making an appointment, the Rice Creek receptionist, very kind, informed me that I could not be seen by a physician unless I gave them my social security number. I only thought....why do you NEED it? I told her I had health insurance and could provide the insurance ID with my driver's license instead, but I didn't feel comfortable providing my social security number since it was unnecessary and not something I wanted floating around everywhere. Also, I have never provided my social security number to any of my doctors and I do mean ever. Later that day on May 31, 2016, I decided to drive up to the facility to speak to a manager and ask why they needed a social security number when they had my ID and all the health insurance information. I was hoping I could still go where my mother suggested. The manager stated that it was just what they do (protocol) and they needed it for insurance (I still don't understand that)...there is still no connection there, the insurance company doesn't even have it. One woman who worked there stood there while the manager and I conversated, just to be nosy, which is unprofessional and intimidating, and the manager had a nasty/sarcastic tone while explaining (lots of pauses and blank emotionless stares). She said if I wasn't comfortable giving out my SS number, I didn't have to, which is true, but they would refuse to treat me...again, nasty tone/body language. I called my insurance company immediately after and they agreed it's not necessary to give a SS number to be treated by a doctor, especially if you're INSURED and connected me with other doctors in the area under my network. I went to this facility under the impression that they were the best in the Northeast area and wanted to make them home to my family physician, but I feel as if the staff was unprofessional and rude. I also believe that the SS number policy is an unnecessary fraud risk, especially when patients have insurance that can be easily verified. I'm sure my mother wasn't wrong about her positive experiences here, and I hope in the future this policy will change and other guests can feel more comfortable when interacting with the staff.
